Graham Hughes

Graham Hughes died following a fight on 4 November 2019 at Uist Place, Perth.

A man was tried for his culpable homicide but a verdict of not proven was returned.

They had had a fight after Graham Hughes was said to have challenged the man, thinking that he was trying to break into his van. 

The man said that he had acted in self-defence. He said, 'It was atrocious weather and I was standing between a BMW and a van trying to light a cigarette'. He denied having been nudging into vehicles and said that Graham Hughes grabbed him from behind by his hood and said, 'Here you'.

He said that he tried to pull away, but couldn't and so he grabbed his t-shirt and that Graham Hughes then punched him and burst his nose.

The man said, 'I told him: ‘Don’t punch me,' and I also said: 'Let go of my hood'. It was all so fast. I punched him back, I thought I was being attacked. I was defending myself. He thought I was doing something to his van, but he never gave me a chance or minute to explain'.

He said that he had no idea that Graham Hughes had been injured and said that when he heard that he had died that he had been devastated.

However, after hearing the evidence the jury returned a verdict of not proven.
